Is Peter the Rock that the church would be build on?:

Matthew 16:15 (NKJV)  He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Matthew 16:16 (NKJV)  Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Matthew 16:17 (NKJV)  Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 16:18 (NKJV)  "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Peter is a Stone.

John 1:42 (NKJV)  And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, "You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas" (which is translated, A Stone).

Peters name means "Stone" not "Rock".

We also know that in Greek the word for Peter in Matthew 16:18 is "Petros", whick means "Stone".

The Greek word for Rock in Matthew 16:18 is "Petra" which means "Mountain".

Peter is not the "Rock" in this passage.  He is the "Stone".

In fact Peter was sort of a "rolling stone".  We see in this same chapter Jesus would say to Peter, "Get behind Me Satan".

We need to understand Peters role in this passage.

Peters role is that he made a confession of his faith in verse 16.

Matthew 16:16 (NKJV)  Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

This is the "Petra" (Mountain) that the church is built on.  Every Christian that had ever made this statement of faith has become a Christian and has become one of the church.  So every beleiver in Christ as God and Savior is adding to the church or building it.

There is no other Rock than God.

Isaiah 44:8 (NKJV)  Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.''

This verse in Isaiah teaches us that there is no "Rock" than God.  If there is no other "Rock" than God then how could Peter be the "Rock"?

Jesus is the Rock !

1 Corinthians 10:4 (NKJV)  ..and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.

If there is no "Rock" than God in Isaiah 44 and Jesus is the "Rock" in 1 Corinthians 10, then Peter cant be the "Rock", Jesus is since He is God!

Jesus has the keys !

Matthew 16:19 (NKJV)  "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Revalation 1:18 (NKJV)  "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.
