Do Christians need to keep the Sabbath?:

The Sabbath was for the Old Testament until Jesus would come.

Exodus 20:8 says:  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Remember the Sabbath Day" is from the Old Testament.

The premise I will make to you is the rememberance Christians should be doing now is Communion not trying to keep the Sabbath.

Luke 22:19,20  And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

We had an old "Remember" in the Old Testament.  We have a new "Remember" in the New Testament.

Colossians 2:16,17  So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,   which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

The Sabbath is a shadow of Jesus who came to visit the earth and pay for the sins of the world.

Hebrews 4:1-7
THEREFORE, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
"So I swore in My wrath,
'They shall not enter My rest,
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: "And God rested on the seventh day from all His works";
and again in this place: "They shall not enter My rest."
Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience,
again He designates a certain day, saying in David, "Today," after such a long time, as it has been said:

The reason we know the Sabbath has changed is because:

1)   The writer of Hebrews just stated in Hebrews 4 in a warning to be afraid of not entering it.

2) Sin has been paid for once for all.  Communion is the new covenant.  Communion speaks of sacrifice and is the fulfillment of the Sabbath Rest.  Christians dont keep the shadow when Jesus already kept it for us.  Now we must enter that rest by entering into the new covenant in Jesus Christ

God in the OT said “remember the Sabbath, Jesus (God in the flesh) said in the NT “do this in remembrance of Me”.  Communion.

We don’t keep the Sabbath; Jesus has kept the Sabbath when He paid for sins on the cross.  Now we rest in His finished work.

The Sabbath was God worked 6 days and rested on the Sabbath or 7th day.   Jesus God in the flesh, is the Sabbath Rest.

Jesus finished the work of the old covenant and in the new covenant we now rest in Him.

Hebrews 4:10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

Jesus said, "it is finished".  Why do we insist on keeping the works He completed?

John 17:4  I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

Matthew 26:26   And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."

Matthew 26:27   Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.

Matthew 26:28   "For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Matthew 26:29   "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

In the Old Covenant (OT) the Jews kept the Sabbath in remembrance of Gods command. This was over according to Hebrews 3 and 4 when Jesus came.

In the New Covenant (NT) the Church is to stop the Sabbath remembrance and do Communion instead until Jesus returns.  Then Jesus will have communion with us again.

If you stay in the old covenant thinking you need to keep the Sabbath then you have not entered into the new covenant of grace.  This is what the writer of Hebrews is warning about when he says “fear to enter in" at verse 1 of chapter 4.

Don’t let other Christians judge you about Sabbath days.

Colossians 2:16,17  So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,   which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

Colossians 2:18   Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in [false] humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Right after the Apostle Paul says, let no one judge you on "Sabbaths", he says that this judging is done by those who want to "cheat you of your reward", have "false humility" and are "puffed up" and "fleshly".  We are to make judgements about Christian truth but not on the topics the bible tells us not to.

Romans 14:4-6  Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.  One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind.  He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks.

Now the 7th Day Adventists say these Sabbath days are not the Sabbath but just various festivals.  But this includes the Sabbath God spoke of in the beginning of the bible.

7th Day Adventists and many Messianic Jews say that we need to keep the main Sabbath because it was spoken before the law of Moses.

Well sacrifice was also mentioned before the law of Moses in Genesis 3, do we need to keep that practice too?

There is a new covenant and a new memorial.

Jesus said, " this in remembrance of Me."

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

“For” having spoken about Gods rest in Hebrews 4:1-7 the author confirms his doctrinal statements about the Diety of Christ , the end of the Sabbath rest, by affirming the authority of his statements as the word of God.

I am not saying we dont keep any of the law anymore.  We cannot murder or steal, adultery ect.  What I am saying is the way we see the Sabbath has changed as the Covenant has changed according to Jesus instructions about the new Covenant when He instituted Communion.  The principal of rest is needed for the Christian.  But we esteem every day as the Lord's Day.  Romans 14.

Christians dont go to church on Sunday because we dont know that the Sabbath is on Saturday.  We go on Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ which is Sunday.

Catholics have changed the Sabbath day to Sunday.  You cant change the sabbath day you merely need to realize that it was fulfilled when Jesus came.

This page is not inteded to make problems with 7th Day Adventists or Messianic Jews.  It is merely a response (defense or apologetics or polemics) to the statements they make frequently against us.
